The Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Co-operatives, in partnership with the Co-operative Housing Association of Newfoundland and Labrador and CHF Canada, has developed two practical resources to help grow co-operative housing in Newfoundland and Labrador. This work builds on a partnership to strengthen local capacity for housing co-op development and to provide clear, accessible tools for communities and local leaders.
How to Start a Housing Co-operative is a toolkit for community groups that are exploring or beginning the process of developing a housing co-op. It outlines the main steps, from forming a group and understanding the co-op model to planning, incorporation, and governance. The toolkit is designed to help communities understand what is involved in the early stages of development and how to move the work forward.
How to Support Co-operative Housing is a guide for municipalities and other local champions who want to help create the conditions for housing co-ops to develop and succeed. It highlights practical ways to support local initiatives and strengthen the environment for co-operative housing in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Together, these resources introduce the co-operative housing model and provide step-by-step guidance for advancing new projects. Community groups, municipalities, and local leaders are encouraged to use these tools alongside advice and support from sector partners, co-operative organizations, and experienced practitioners.
